Abnormal warm temperature in Verona at the beginning of april. The evening of the 9th was remarkably hot and the atmosphere in the city centre was unforgettable. Lots of people hangin out of bars and restaurants, crowded wine bars (Vinitaly fair was on so thousands of people came over from all over the world). I couldn't resist the Fiat 500 Giardinetta parked on the cobblestones...

Today and tomorrow, all over Italy, loads of people, especially women, will demonstrate their indignation and disdain against the italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. I was among them today and I will be at the parade "Se non ora quando?" (if not now, when?) tomorrow.

This is the leaflet used to promote the political demonstration.

The Duomo is the Cathedral of Verona, called Santa Maria Matricolare. It was built on the site of two paleo-christian churches destroyed by an earthquake in 1117. The "new" building was consacrated on the 13rd of september, 1187.

Church of Santa Anastasia is one of the most beautiful churches of Verona, a masterpiece of gothic art built between 1280 and 1400.

Here is a detail of the beautifully painted ceiling and the organ (1625) of the Miniscalchi altar, decorated in the XVth century.

I lack of information about the sculpture, which was, initially, the object of my photo.

Although today we had a hint of snow in the morning followed by icy rain, a few weeks ago Verona was under a white blanket that lasted a few days. Took this pic in the afternoon when the snowfall was consistent.

Caffè Portegheti

This is one of my fav cafes in the district of Veronetta. It's right in front of St. Thomas Becket's Church, under the "portichetti". It's from this word that the place takes its name, but in veronese dialect, "portegheti". It was a bright, sunny but cold morning and we enjoyed a good coffee.

Pasticceria Miozzi

It's been long time since I last posted a "coffee related" photo. Well, here is one, or rather, two!

I went to the Pasticceria Miozzi for a "midmorning" coffee where I enjoyed this lovely "caffè macchiato" and a tiny "bigné" filled with chantilly cream. The icy cold weather outside made this break even more enjoyable and cosy.

On the counter you can see a "Panettone" a cake that, along with "Pandoro" is one of the typical italian Christmas cakes (the latter is tipically veronese, made by Bauli, Melegatti and Paluani). Some "pasticcerie" make their own, like Miozzi, and they are sold exclusively in the shop.

Thanks every one out there for the Christmas wishes. I hope you, too, had a paceful Christmas and that you are enjoying the season holidays!

Found a few shells among the pebbles on the Garda lakeshore. We sat around a weathered table of a fancy beach cafè for a beer and I put down the shells. The sun reflected on the worn table planks and I thought it created a perfect shabby style pic.

It's been quite hot lately but yesterday and today it got really really sultry, almost suffocating. I took a walk with my daughter in the evening but the usual freshness that comes with the dark hour, failed to arrive. This is Piazza Erbe, cafés packed with people. The Madonna Verona fountain in Piazza Erbe is a fav place for children (and not only) in summer. I stopped here for about twenty minutes as my daughter wanted to get her daily fresh walk; during the time I was there at least 15 children stopped to walk in the freezing water of the old marble fountain... Talent show, rain, summer!

After days of pouring rain and thunderstorms, I am glad to officially welcome summer 2010! I took this photo yesterday, at around noon. At that time (and I suppose even earlier), a crowd of boys and girls stood in front of the stage where, many hours later, sang and danced the winners of one of the most famous italian talent shows, "Amici" (friends). I have never watched it but I know that it is extremely popular and some of the winners have actually become famous, especially singers.

Of course it's not magic, but I like to think it is... You are in Piazza Erbe, under the arches of the Domus Mercatorum and you are attracted by the black curly gate, so you step closer and closer and push it. In a flash of light you swirl into the past... back into the centuries when the Domus Mercatorum had just being built in stone (1301 as you see it now) and it was of key importance in the development of the merchants corporations over the centuries.

...just one more, ok? This is the ancient and picturesque village of Sovana (have a look, it's really interesting!), on the soft hills of southern Maremma, a few miles from the sea.

Every time we go back home in Argentario, we never miss a nice drive inland through the most beautiful villages such as Pitigliano, Sovana and my favourite one: Sorano, among whose green surroundings are to be found archeological treasures like etruscan (and beyond) necropolis hidden in the woods and the mysterious vie cave...

Walking through the narrow alleys of the Filippini district I was captured by the looks of this wooden door. It seems quite old with nicely layered varnish and one perfectly polished bronze handle and one totally blackened, just like the two key holes.

This church in Lazise (Garda Lake) was built in the XII century and dedicated to the Patron Saint of waters and navigators, St. Nicholas (Nicolò). It is rather tiny and simple with no baroque signs whatsoever, no stuccoes, no marbles. Just plain stone with ancient frescoes emerging from under the wall painting.

Here is St. Antony Abbot (on the right), widely venerated in this area as the protector of animals and healer of skin diseases. His left hand holds a rod, symbol of authority, while the right hand makes a blessing with three fingers, as was customary for a bishop.
